Can Scotland learn from history-making Norway?

Norway's historic World Cup run, led by Erling Haaland's two goals in a 2-0 victory over Brazil, has prompted comparisons with Scotland, a nation of similar population that failed to reach the knockout stages. Norway advanced to the quarter-finals for the first time after a 28-year tournament absence, while Scotland's early exit led to the resignation of head coach Steve Clarke. Former England striker Ian Wright criticized Scotland's approach, calling for a "bolder, braver vision" and highlighting Norway's successful investments. Norway's turnaround followed a period of failing to qualify for major tournaments after Euro 2000. The country invested heavily in coaching courses, artificial pitches, and a National Team School (NTS), building 539 new artificial surfaces and renovating 586 others between 2016 and 2025. Haaland, who scored 16 goals in qualifying, is one of 17 players in Norway's 26-man squad who played in top European leagues last season.
