Egypt inaugurates sprawling ‘Octagon’ military headquarters complex

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi inaugurated the nation's new strategic command headquarters, known as the "Octagon," in a ceremony featuring military equipment displays and a drone show. The 22,000-acre complex, located in Cairo's New Administrative Capital, is described by the state information service as the largest facility of its kind in the Middle East, serving as an integrated center for crisis management and smart command. The facility includes eight buildings forming an octagon shape and is equipped with advanced technological infrastructure and secure communication systems. El-Sissi stated that the command represents a "significant leap" in Egypt's command and control systems and is a fundamental pillar in the state's capacity to confront challenges. The inauguration comes amid regional conflicts involving the US, Israel, Iran, and its armed groups. Gawdat Bahgat, a professor at the National Defense University, noted that while Egypt has the largest military in the Arab world and is constantly modernizing, the real value of the facility will depend on how it operates. He added that the wars in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran have created a new strategic landscape, positioning Egypt as a key player in Middle East policy.
