Embolo sent off as result of mistaken identity rule

Switzerland's Breel Embolo became the first player to be sent off under a new mistaken identity rule at the World Cup. Embolo, who had already been booked, received a second yellow card for simulation after a VAR review overturned a caution initially given to Argentina's Leandro Paredes. The incident occurred in the 72nd minute of the quarter-final, just five minutes after Switzerland had equalized against the defending champions. The new rule, requested by head of referees Pierluigi Collina, allows officials to change a booking or sending off if the foul was actually committed by the opposition. If Paredes had not been initially booked, the rule would not have applied and Embolo would have stayed on. Argentina went on to win 3-1 in extra time, with Swiss coach Murat Yakin expressing pride in his team's effort despite being a man down. Pundits criticized Embolo for his dive, saying he let his team down.
