EU admits it cannot stop Sony killing physical discs – "companies are free to offer games and services in the manner that they see fit"

The European Union has stated it cannot prevent Sony from ending physical media for PlayStation, with consumer protection commissioner Michael McGrath saying "companies are free to offer games and services in the manner that they see fit." This comes after Sony announced that all releases from January 2028 onwards will be digital-only. A Change.org petition called "Don't Kill the Disc" has amassed over 286,000 signatures in response to the decision. However, McGrath confirmed that the EU cannot intervene at a regulatory level, citing commercial and contractual freedoms, as long as consumer rights are fully protected under national and EU law.
