Jelly Roll has opened up about his disordered eating habits, comparing his struggles to substance abuse. In a video shared on his YouTube channel, the 41-year-old musician described stress eating over several days and how the "addict in me came out." He explained that he cannot have just one treat, like a dairy-free skillet cookie, because it leads to a "five-day food bender" of overeating, similar to his past experiences with alcohol and cocaine. The singer, who has lost over 275 pounds through exercise and diet, told a fan that he can relate to overeating in private and emphasized that becoming his size involves a mental health issue. "People don't get it. I tell people, you don't become the size me and you became without having a mental health issue," he said. He noted that once he realized his all-or-nothing approach applies to food, he now avoids certain trigger foods entirely, saying, "I just don't eat it."
