Jesus reunites with Ronaldo as new Portugal head coach

Jorge Jesus has been appointed as Portugal's new head coach on a four-year contract running through to the 2030 World Cup, which Portugal will co-host with Spain and Morocco. The 71-year-old replaces Roberto Martinez, who stepped down after Portugal's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup's last 16. Jesus previously coached national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr, where they won the Saudi Pro League title. Jesus stated that Ronaldo, who confirmed this would be his sixth and final World Cup, is a "symbol of Portuguese football" and will be selected as long as he is playing and in condition to be picked. He added that he has not yet spoken with Ronaldo about the national team role but described him as easy to work with. Jesus' first match in charge will be Portugal's Nations League opener against Wales on 24 September.
