Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans, as the club continues its efforts to strengthen its midfield this summer. The 29-year-old Belgian international has a release clause in his Villa contract, which is facilitating negotiations, and a deal is reported to be close. Tielemans has been on United's radar for a considerable time and brings a wealth of Premier League experience. United have faced frustration in their transfer pursuits, failing to sign first-choice targets Elliot Anderson (joining Manchester City) and Mateus Fernandes (moving to Tottenham). A £35m deal for Brazil World Cup star Ederson from Atalanta has been scrapped after a knee injury was flagged during medical tests, though the transfer could be resurrected later in the summer. Chelsea's Andrey Santos is understood to have had his medical before a £48m switch, with his arrival not triggered by the Ederson issues. The club's only experienced orthodox central midfielder is Kobbie Mainoo, who has yet to feature in England's World Cup campaign. Tielemans was a key figure in Belgium's run to the World Cup quarter-finals but was forced to pull out of their defeat to Spain after suffering an injury in the warm-up.
