NATO’s plan to buy Triton drones: Three cheers, two concerns

NATO nations announced plans to purchase up to five MQ-4C Triton unmanned aerial vehicles at their summit in Turkey, with Denmark, Finland, Germany, and Norway leading the procurement. The Triton is a high-altitude, long-endurance maritime surveillance aircraft originally developed for the US Navy, intended to expand NATO's ISR Force. The article offers three cheers for the plan: tactical benefit from Triton's superior sensors including electro-optical, infrared, and signals intelligence capabilities that NATO's existing RQ-4Ds lack; operational gain from more persistent surveillance in key areas like the Baltic Sea and High North; and strategic benefit from reducing NATO's reliance on US surveillance capabilities. However, the authors express two concerns. First, the four leading countries will likely want the aircraft based in or near their territory for political reasons, though this also makes operational sense. Second, while buying Triton helps burden-shifting within NATO amid pressure from President Donald Trump, the alliance still has a long way to go in reducing dependence on American capabilities. The strengthened surveillance posture will signal to Russia that wrongdoing will be detected, potentially deterring aggressive actions.
