OpenAI has launched its newest family of AI models, GPT-5.6, which comes in three variants: Sol (the workhorse), Terra (an intermediate option), and Luna (the budget-friendly option). The company promises powerful capabilities in enterprise work, coding, and scientific research. CEO Sam Altman stated that the models are significantly more efficient and cost-effective than previous versions, with Sol being 54% more token efficient for AI coding tasks. OpenAI is positioning GPT-5.6 as its strongest cybersecurity model yet, capable of supporting defensive activities like threat modeling and code review. The company also released a new tool called ChatGPT Work, designed as a workplace companion for enterprise teams. The launch is seen as a direct challenge to rival Anthropic, with OpenAI citing the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index to claim its models outperform Anthropic's. Specifically, OpenAI claims Sol sets a new state of the art at 80 points on the index, 2.8 points above Anthropic's Fable 5, while using less than half the output tokens and costing about one-third less. The models are now available across ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API, with pricing varying by variant. This release follows similar announcements from competitors SpaceXAI and Meta.
