Randolph Mantooth Dead at 80: 'Emergency!' Star Dies After Long Illness

3d · 8 views

Randolph Mantooth, best known for playing firefighter-paramedic Johnny Gage on the hit 1970s NBC series Emergency!, has died at the age of 80. His brother Donald Mantooth confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the actor died on Thursday, July 9, at a hospice facility in Ventura, California, after being "ill for a number of years." Mantooth rose to fame in 1972 when he was cast as the quick-witted Johnny Gage opposite Kevin Tighe's Roy DeSoto on the groundbreaking drama. The series followed the firefighters and paramedics of Los Angeles County Fire Department's fictional Station 51 and ran for six seasons through 1977, later returning for a series of TV movies. Before landing the role, Mantooth admitted he had no idea what a paramedic was, initially reacting with, "What the hell is a paramedic?" Emergency! proved to be much more than a television hit, credited with helping raise awareness and support for modern emergency medical services. When the series started, there were only 12 paramedic units in North America; within three years, 46 states had passed laws allowing paramedics to practice. Reflecting on the show's legacy, Mantooth said, "I could be remembered for driving a car that has a name like the General Lee... Instead I'm remembered for something that changed emergency medicine, forever." Beyond Emergency!, Mantooth enjoyed a decades-long television career, including roles on soap operas such as Loving, General Hospital, As the World Turns, and One Life to Live.
