On his podcast, Donovan said Pulisic "just hasn't" performed in big moments and big games, noting that he failed to score in the tournament and made little impact before leaving the Belgium match with an injury. Donovan also addressed reports that Pulisic asked to be subbed out of the game, saying he could not confirm it but stating, "You would have had to f***ing drag me off the field." He criticized Pulisic's inconsistency, pointing out that he took time off for the Gold Cup to rest but has still been injured and hasn't played well for the national team or his club, AC Milan. Other U.S. soccer legends, including Carli Lloyd and Sydney Leroux, also criticized Pulisic for saying he now has time to "rest" after the World Cup exit.
