This startup thinks robotics is about to have its ChatGPT moment

General Intuition, a startup backed by Bezos and valued at $2.3 billion, believes the robotics industry is on the cusp of a breakthrough similar to the one that transformed AI with foundation models like GPT-3. CEO Pim de Witte argues that rather than collecting massive real-world datasets for specialized robots, the industry should focus on quality data to build general foundation models capable of transferring movement and spatial reasoning across different environments. The company has developed its own foundation model after training on millions of hours of video game data, including controller inputs. The startup recently raised $320 million and demonstrated that its model can power a quadrupedal robot after fine-tuning on just eight minutes of real-world data. General Intuition's end goal is not to build robots itself, but to become the foundation model for physical AI, making it easier for other companies to develop robotics applications.
