Tottenham seal £100m move for Newcastle's Tonali

Tottenham have completed the signing of Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali for a club-record fee that could reach £100m. The 26-year-old joins after three seasons with the Magpies, with an initial payment of £92.5m plus £7.5m in add-ons. Tonali expressed his happiness, stating he spoke with head coach Roberto de Zerbi for nearly two hours and knew immediately he had to sign for Tottenham. He joins fellow big-money signing Mateus Fernandes, who moved from West Ham for £85m. Tonali, an Italy international, joined Newcastle from AC Milan for £55m in July 2023. He was banned for 10 months for breaching betting rules shortly after his arrival but became a key player on his return, helping Newcastle win the Carabao Cup in 2025. In a social media post, Tonali thanked the staff, teammates, and manager Eddie Howe, calling him a "real guiding figure." Spurs boss De Zerbi described Tonali as a "special player" and noted his desire to join the club. Tottenham have been busy this summer after finishing 17th in the Premier League last season. Defenders Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have arrived on free transfers, and the club could spend a combined £237m on three players. Spurs sporting director Johan Lange praised Tonali's technical quality and character. Tottenham can spend significantly under new squad-cost ratio rules, which allow them to use up to 85% of their revenue on player costs.
