US Navy fears ballistic missile subs can be hit by drones, anti-tank rockets

The U.S. Navy is seeking better methods to protect its ballistic missile submarines from new threats including drones, mines, and anti-tank rockets. While the subs are practically invulnerable when hidden deep in the ocean, they can be vulnerable when berthed in port or sailing on the surface. The Navy notes that Ukraine claims to have successfully used an underwater drone to damage a Russian submarine last year, and that guerrillas could use anti-tank guided missiles to ambush an unwary sub. The Navy is looking for prototype technologies to detect, track, and defeat unmanned systems, as well as ways to escort and protect missile subs as they transit to and from port. Other security measures being sought include sensors to protect harbors, security robots for waterside patrol and perimeter screening, and countermeasures against AI-enabled threats like drone swarms and cyberwarfare. The Navy is also interested in active protection systems for truck convoys hauling ICBMs to sub bases.
