Amazon bars breastfeeding boss from business course

A breastfeeding business owner, Rachel Bews, was barred from an in-person business course run by Amazon at a warehouse in Dunfermline, Scotland, because the company would not allow her 20-week-old baby on the site. Bews said she had informed Amazon a week in advance that she would need to bring her baby as she was breastfeeding, but was told over the phone while on the train to the event that children under six were not permitted. Amazon apologized for not communicating its site access policy clearly before she traveled, stating that it does not permit children under six on any of its fulfilment centre sites due to a long-standing health and safety policy. The company said it is reviewing its communications process to prevent a similar incident. Bews noted that while a lactation room was available at the event, she had not planned for it and did not have sterilized bottles or equipment for expressing milk, adding that not every breastfed baby will feed from a bottle. Bews expressed frustration at missing out on the in-person networking opportunities, which she said are crucial for making connections to help her business. She emphasized the importance of accessibility and inclusivity at events for new mothers and professional women. Amazon stated that Bews could continue with the online part of the six-week course.
