Penalty? Red card? Why were they given against England?

England were reduced to 10 men and had a controversial penalty awarded against them in a crucial World Cup last-16 match against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium. The Three Lions led 2-0 in the first half thanks to two goals from Jude Bellingham, but Julian Quinones pulled a goal back just before the break. The game saw two major decisions in the second half: first, Jarell Quansah was sent off in the 54th minute after a VAR review showed he went in on Jesus Gallardo with his studs up. Former assistant referee Darren Cann commented on BBC One that it was "a clear red card," explaining that while Quansah played the ball first, "that doesn't matter in the laws of the game" as he went through with studs on the shin. England restored their two-goal lead when Harry Kane converted a penalty, but Mexico fought back when they were awarded a spot-kick after Kane appeared to clip Brian Gutierrez. Referee Alireza Faghani reviewed the incident on the monitor and awarded the penalty, which Raul Jimenez converted. Cann compared the incident to a similar kick by Luka Modric for which England had received a penalty earlier in the tournament, noting that "Kane is unaware of the player coming in behind." Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart felt all the key decisions were correct, stating on BBC One: "I think the referee has come to the right decision on all three [both penalties and the red card]."
