Spain's World Cup challenge built on historic defence

Spain advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals after a 1-0 win over Portugal, with Mikel Merino scoring a late winner. The team has built its challenge on a historic defence, becoming the first in World Cup history to keep a clean sheet in six consecutive matches, breaking the previous record held by Italy and Switzerland. Spain have now gone 10 hours and nine minutes without conceding a goal in the competition, stretching back to a goalless draw in the last 16 in 2022. Spanish football expert Guillem Balague said the team "knows how to compete" and is committed and unified. While Spain possess attacking talent like Mikel Oyarzabal and Lamine Yamal, and midfield riches including Pedri and 2024 Ballon d'Or winner Rodri, their defensive solidity has been the foundation of their success. Goalkeeper Unai Simon has extended his record without conceding to 609 minutes, surpassing marks set by Walter Zenga and Iker Casillas. Manager Luis de la Fuente attributed the defensive record to collective work, solidarity, and sacrifice from all players. Balague noted that Spain defended in numbers and tracked back collectively, meaning Simon has not needed to make miracle saves. The team is now three wins from a second World Cup title, having previously won in 2010 with a similar defensive approach.
