The retreat from mobile games continues as Mario Kart Tour and Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis will be taken offline later this year

The retreat from mobile adaptations of big gaming brands continues as Nintendo and Square Enix have announced they're winding down their mobile games Mario Kart Tour and Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis, respectively. The cut-off dates line up, with Mario Kart Tour going offline on September 29th-30th and Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis ending service on October 6th. Mario Kart Tour players can no longer buy rubies or the Gold Pass, and some players are already asking for an offline version of the game. Less is known about the shutdown of Square Enix's mobile take on FF7, but it was noted that "after careful consideration," it was deemed difficult to support the game into the future. Ever Crisis faced a slowdown during its second month, with $20.8m generated in September 2023 and $13.3m the following month. By late 2024, it had surpassed $100m in gross player spending, with 71 percent of revenue coming from Japan, though the game never sustained an enduring community. There is precedent for Square Enix turning mobile games into premium single-player releases like Octopath Traveler 0 and the upcoming Final Fantasy Resonance, which could indicate similar treatment for Ever Crisis. Meanwhile, IO Interactive has also quietly confirmed it's stepping away from mobile devices to focus on its core properties.
