Ukraine to get ‘license’ for making Patriot interceptors, Trump pledges

President Donald Trump announced at the NATO summit in Ankara that the United States will give Ukraine a license to manufacture Patriot missiles. Speaking at a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump said, "We're going to give a license to you to make Patriots," adding that it's a defensive weapon which he prefers over offensive weapons. The announcement comes as Ukraine continues to face Russian ballistic missile attacks, with Ukraine's air defenses unable to down any of the five ballistic missiles used in a recent overnight strike on Kyiv. The specifics of which type of interceptor missile—the simpler PAC-2 or the more capable PAC-3—Trump intends to allow Ukraine to build remain unclear and would need to be worked out with U.S. contractors. Trump said pressure could be applied to companies like Lockheed Martin, the prime contractor for the interceptor missiles, though he acknowledged they haven't informed the company yet. The announcement was quickly picked up by Russian state media, and comes just days after Kremlin spokesperson Dimitry Peskov dropped the euphemism of "special military operation" in Ukraine, instead calling it a "real war" due to Western involvement.
