Benedito was born in São Paulo on April 17, 1931, and built a solid career in Brazilian television dramaturgy, creating rural-themed plots and a new style of soap opera. His major successes include Meu Pedacinho de Chão, Terra Nostra, O Rei do Gado, Pantanal, and Cabocla. He was married to actress Marilene Leonor Barbosa for 56 years until her death in 2014, and they had four children.
