Former Xbox boss Don Mattrick once reportedly suggested that Halo 4 should feature a real-money auction house for campaign mech skins, similar to the controversial one in Diablo 3. The anecdote was shared by former Bungie designer Dan Callan, who recalled demoing a mission for Mattrick. Callan said everyone around Mattrick reacted as if it were a groundbreaking idea, while simultaneously realizing it was the "stupidest shit imaginable" given how poorly Diablo 3's auction house had been received. Halo 4 did not launch with such a feature, and Mattrick left Microsoft and Xbox in 2013. It is unclear how the team talked him down from the idea. Callan concluded that game executives remain "stupid detached money grubbing idiots" and added that this wasn't even the dumbest thing said that day.
