Andy Serkis has responded to criticism regarding the lack of diversity in the cast of The Hunt for Gollum, the new Lord of the Rings film set for release in 2027. Serkis, who will both direct and reprise his role as Gollum, acknowledged the weight of the criticism but defended the casting choices, stating that the film is not intended to be a "politically correct" version. He explained that Tolkien was heavily influenced by Norse mythology and that the Shire has a very "white" feel, with its inhabitants not being concerned with what happens beyond their borders.
