Quem era Benedito Ruy Barbosa, autor de clássicos da TV brasileira

Writer and playwright Benedito Ruy Barbosa died on Tuesday, July 7, at age 95, while hospitalized at HCor in São Paulo with a kidney failure condition diagnosed three years ago. The hospital confirmed his death was due to complications of chronic renal failure. Born in São Paulo on April 17, 1931, Benedito built one of the most solid careers in Brazilian television dramaturgy, creating rural-themed plots that helped establish a new style of soap opera in the country. His major successes include Meu Pedacinho de Chão, Terra Nostra, O Rei do Gado, Pantanal, and Cabocla. His inspiration came from his childhood in Vera Cruz, São Paulo, surrounded by coffee plantations and immigrant communities. After working as a journalist, he wrote his first novel, Somos Todos Irmãos, in 1966 for TV Tupi. He later joined TV Globo, where he wrote classics like Cabocla and Sinhá Moça. Italian immigration was a central theme in O Rei do Gado and Terra Nostra. He also oversaw remakes of Sinhá Moça in 2006 and Meu Pedacinho de Chão in 2014.
