Microsoft has acknowledged that Xbox missed a major opportunity with one of its most important games, Minecraft, due to insufficient investment. According to sources from Game File, Xbox believes that Minecraft has been competing with Roblox, and while both titles had similar popularity about six years ago, Roblox has since pulled ahead. Xbox estimates that Roblox received five times more investment than Minecraft, as much of Minecraft's revenue was redirected to other divisions within Microsoft's gaming sector rather than being reinvested into the Mojang-developed title. As part of a major restructuring, Microsoft has laid off 3,200 workers and separated from five studios. Going forward, Minecraft and King (the studio behind Candy Crush) will report directly to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, rather than to Matt Booty, the head of studios and content. This change is intended to prioritize these key profitable properties and address the previous lack of investment.
