If you use Google, you’re training its AI. Here’s how to opt out.

A recent, under-the-radar update to Google's privacy settings now allows the company to store more user data—including images, audio, and video recordings—to train its AI models. The change, announced via customer email in June, effectively opted users into this expanded data collection under the guise of offering more control over saved history and personalized recommendations. This applies not only to Google Search but also to services like Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate, and News, meaning activities like using Google Lens or voice search can now be saved for AI training. Google confirms that saved media is used to develop and improve its services, including AI models and safety measures, with human reviewers sometimes involved. However, users can opt out by adjusting their preferences on the Search Services History and Search Services Personalization pages. On the former, users can uncheck the "Save Media" box separately or configure automatic deletion of saved data after 3, 18, or 36 months. Further privacy settings can be managed on a separate page for Web & App Activity, YouTube History, and more.
