Andrew Gillum, the former Florida Democratic governor nominee in 2018, was arrested in Daphne, Alabama, on Thursday, July 2, on charges of possession of methamphetamine and other drug offenses. According to the arrest report, Gillum, 46, allegedly possessed three grams of methamphetamine, eight pre-rolled marijuana joints, a bong, three pipes, and other drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Baldwin County jail on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance, as well as misdemeanor charges for possession of drug paraphernalia and second-degree possession of marijuana, and was released on Friday, July 3. The Daphne Police Department has not shared additional details about the events leading up to the arrest, and it is unclear if Gillum has entered a plea or retained legal counsel. Following his arrest, Gillum participated in a panel at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans on Saturday, July 4, without mentioning the incident. This is not Gillum's first encounter with legal and personal controversies. In 2020, he was found inebriated in a Florida hotel room with a male sex worker who had overdosed, and authorities found bags containing crystal meth; no charges were filed, and he later entered rehab for alcoholism. In 2022, he was indicted on 21 federal criminal counts for allegedly fraudulently soliciting political donations, but a jury found him not guilty on one charge and remained deadlocked on the rest, leading to the case being dropped in 2023.
