Why switching to save money is easier than you might think

A new article by BBC Cost of Living correspondent Kevin Peachey explains that switching providers for broadband, pay TV, energy, and bank accounts is often easier than consumers think, potentially saving hundreds of pounds. Regulators have simplified the process in recent years, with Ofcom's One Touch Switch service, launched in 2024, allowing customers to switch broadband providers by only contacting the new provider, avoiding negotiations with the old one. The article notes that Virgin Media was recently fined £28m for obstructing cancellations, but the new system aims to prevent such hassles. For bank accounts, the Current Account Switch Service automates the transfer of direct debits, standing orders, and incoming payments, and will close the old account. Banks often offer cash incentives to switch, though customers must ensure the new bank covers any existing overdraft. When switching energy suppliers, Ofgem has also streamlined the process, requiring only contact with the new supplier. Key considerations include payment method (direct debit is typically cheaper), outstanding bills, and choosing between fixed or variable tariffs.
