Former PlayStation leader Shawn Layden has stated that Microsoft's Xbox business must make a strategic choice: focus on becoming the world's largest game publisher or focus on being a traditional console platform holder, but it cannot successfully do both. Layden argues that these two paths diverge because a successful platform requires exclusive content, while a major publisher must release games on multiple platforms. Layden explained that during his time at PlayStation, the first-party studios never captured more than 22% of the market, with the majority of business coming from third-party publishers. He noted that Microsoft's recent acquisitions have put it in a position to be the biggest publisher, but this conflicts with the need for platform exclusivity. Layden made these comments following a since-deleted LinkedIn post in which he criticized Microsoft's strategy.
